SQL Connection Error messages - PT2 & PA Hud

So you are unable to start the service?
If you go to Start > Settings > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services and find PostgreSQL 8.2 in the list, does it say it's Started? If not, try to start it. What happens? If you get an error, what is it?

When did you backup the database last?

The status is blank, so it doesn't say it has started. When I try to start it, I receive:

"Could not start the postrgre SQL Database server 8.2 service on Local computer. Error 1503 The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion"

As far as backup, I'm afraid this has failed also - I'm receiving an error message "an error occurred when opening the backup archive...", so it does seem as if something has been corrupted. Other than all of these problems, my pc seems fine!

It does seem that the problem has occurred since installing the iolo firewall/AV, but this may or may not be the cause.

Here is what you will need to do...

1. Create a new folder on your C drive called PostgreSQL_Data.
2. Go to the c:\program files\postgresql\8.2 folder. Right-click on the "data" folder and select "Copy" from the popup menu.
3. Go to the newly created c:\PostgreSQL_Data folder and right-click and select "Paste" from the popup menu.
4. Now, go to the Start menu and select Settings > Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs and then remove PostgreSQL 8.2 from the list.
5. From the Start menu again select Run. On the window that opens type "COMMAND" and hit OK. This will open a DOS window. Type the following next to the prompt...

net user postgres /delete

and hit ENTER to run it. Then type EXIT to close the DOS window.

6. Now, download and reinstall PostgreSQL as directed here:

WITH THE EXCEPTION THAT on the second window where it asks you where you want to install PostgreSQL click on the "Data Directory" button and navigate to the c:\PostgreSQL_Data\data folder and select that. This will force it to try to reuse your old data.

CONTINUE until you get to the window that has the "Initialize Database Cluster" box at the top left corner. UNCHECK THIS BOX and click the Next button and then just continue installing from there.

7. Once the install is done, RESTART YOUR COMPUTER and then try to open PT again.

I went through the steps you listed (thanks for the step-by step process!) until postgreSQL installed successfully.

However, when starting PT, I still receive the same error message 101 SQLSTATE 08001....., etc

I went into control panel/service and postgre SQL status was blank again. I tried to start it, and received the message "the postgre SQL service on local computer started and then stopped. Some services stop automatically if they have no work to do, for example the performance logs and alerts service".

I am starting to wonder if there is a problem with my machine....

What happens if you uninstall and reinstall PostgreSQL again. This time however, in step 6, instead of pointing it to the old data folder, act like you are installing PostgreSQL for the first time and just leave everything set to the default values (when you get to the Initialize Database Cluster" window, leave that box checked and click the Next button to keep installing.

Prior to installing, I have received a message, which I must have missed previously (as I guess it must have come up):

"The installer has detected an incompatible version of open SSL installed in your system PATH. Postgre SQL requires open SSL 0.9.7 or later. If you remove your open SSL files (LIBEAY32.DLL and SSLEAY32.DLL the installer will install the new version automatically"

As such, I haven't completed the installation just yet, in case I need further instructions first!.

Look in the c:\windows\system32 folder for those files, that's usually where they are and rename both of them to anything you want and then try to install again.

It seems that my pc is fighting against the installation!

The install begins and looks as if it is going ok, but then it says " Service PostgreSQL Database Server 8.2 could not be installed. Verify that you have sufficient privileges to install system services"

It didn't say this previously, so I'm not sure what has changed.

Ar you using Vista? If so, make sure you turn off the UAC first.
